It will take you one hour’s drive from the Central Business District of Melbourne, through beautiful, undulating countryside and you will find the Yarra Valley.
The Yarra Valley is one of the most beautiful wine tour regions of Victoria and home to the arts, wine, wildlife and spectacular scenery.
Melbourne was settled in 1835 and the first vines were planted in 1838 by the Ryrie Brothers at Yering Station in this particular location. In 1845, James Dardel made the first wine. In 1889 Yeringberg, won a Grand Prix at the Paris Exhibition, the only wine from the Southern Hemisphere to do so.
In 1937, due to economic depression and adverse natural conditions the Yarra Valley converted all vineyards back to pasture, but in 1963 Wantirna Estate was the first of the new generation to establish wineries. From then on the wine industry in the region went from strength to strength, now boasting approximately 80 vineyards. Wine & Food Lovers’ Tours visit some of the bigger vineyards and some smaller vineyards such as Squitchy Lane and Pimpernel Vineyards.
